Just moved to Luxembourg: where do you start?
Three contracts are enough for the first few weeks. The rest can wait until the boxes are unpacked.
Moving to Luxembourg comes with a long list of administrative steps, and insurance easily gets lost in it. Here is the order that makes sense, from most urgent to least.
1. Private liability
The cheapest contract and the one that covers the widest range of situations: damage you, your children or your pet cause to someone else. It is often already part of home insurance, which settles two needs at once.
2. Home insurance
Your landlord will ask for it when the lease is signed, with a certificate. Arrange it before you collect the keys, not after.
3. Motor insurance, if you drive
Third-party liability is compulsory from registration in Luxembourg — no certificate, no plates. If you arrive with a foreign-registered car, move this one up the list.
What can wait a few weeks
- Legal protection, useful as soon as a dispute becomes likely: lease, building work, employer.
- Travel cover, if you are often away.
- Pension savings: the third pillar opens tax deductions in Luxembourg, but nothing presses in the first month.
One practical tip: keep the certificates from your previous contracts, in particular your motor claims record. It sets your premium here and has to be requested from your former insurer — better straight away than later.
